Today was the start of the road trip, dashing south from New York to Alexandria (Washington) via Philadelphia and Baltimore.
First stop was Philly, home of Rocky Balboa and the first government of the US. We had a couple of hours in Independence Mall to see the hall (not unlike the Gympie Courthouse) in which the Constitution was drafted and agreed and the Liberty Bell. No signs at all of Nicholas Cage being chased by bad guys...
Back on the I95, we headed south past Baltimore into Alexandria for the afternoon. Again, there is an incredible amount of construction underway; the countryside is flat and lush, and seems to be browning out for Autumn. The evening took us to Georgetown for dinner. Georgetown is an older, swanky, and very stylish part of Washington. Very tidy and surprisingly pretty along the Potomac River.
Following dinner we dropped by the JFK Performing Arts Complex and the World War Two memorial in the mall for some sightseeing. Being late when we got back to the hotel, we crashed pretty hard.
Next is another trip – by day – to the mall, where we’ll see more of the monuments and spend a fair amount of time looking at the various Smithsonian museums.
