11/09/12: New York

Well, after 18 hours in flight, and good amount of time in between, we made it to the hotel at a wearying 3.00am.

As far as flights go, it was a pretty good trip. The Air New Zealand seats were cramped, but fairly soft (although our butts forgot this by the sixth hour of flight). Auckland Airport is plush and comfortable. Los Angeles was hot and not as as swish. Neither of us can remember much of Newark…

After a late start, we wandered out to Central Park, mainly to get some rays to overcome the jet lag. We’ve been blessed with good weather. Later we jumped on a Hop-On-Hop-Off bus to get our bearings and take a brief walk on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Later we swung by Times Square – bright, loud and full of life. Dinner brought some NY Pizza and gelato (although the latter not quite as good as the genuine item).

Impressions so far: lots of life…this town is buzzing with energy. The are people, cars, taxis and buses in every direction you look. Construction seems to be happening every twenty yards – it strikes you as a place undergoing continual renewal. Locals are friendly and helpful, even if every so often you find them having a very loud and heated arguments with some other poor bugger on the other end of their cellphone. Sure it is rough around the edges (the streets o f Gympie are smoother), and lacks that “something” we experienced in Europe, but its an eye opener for us country bumpkins.

Over the next couple of days we hope to visit the Empire State Building or Top of the Rock and take a cruise to see the Statue of Liberty

  1. Glad you arrived safely in Randall's (my ex) old hometown! He loves New York and lived there for nine years...on 88th Street, on the Upper East Side....take a wander along there sometime. You never know you might run into Carrie and the girls as well!!

If you run into Katie Holmes and Suri...tell Katie it was good to see her come to her senses at long last!! ;)

Enjoy the "Big Apple", you two.
