18/09/12: To the Windy City

Today we woke to an icy breeze and light showers…not much fun, but today was a travel day, so we were kept cosy on the bus after leaving our pink hotel (the locals call it the Pink Palace). Don't let the outside deceive you - the inside was victorian in style and very nice indeed.

First stop was a short way down the road at the Henry Ford Museum. Neither of us were especially excited about the visit, but changed our minds: the museum is spectacular. Mainly a car museum, it also has some amazing exhibits of railway locomotives, steam engines, aircraft and other Americana.

The rest of the day was taken crossing from Michigan into Indiana and then into Illinois, bringing us to our destination of Chicago. Our hotel is little south of the centre of town, so we’ve been out to eat followed by short walk to check out the Buckingham Fountain.

We have a late start in the morning, and will be taking in the sights by bus and water. We are keeping our fingers crossed for warmer temperatures – the wind is icy…perhaps that is why they call it the “Windy City”.
